Tal investigação mostra como há uma unidade histórica e cultural no imaginário português, através deste percurso, pelo modo específico como são realizados os filmes de terror em Portugal. Os capítulos estão organizados de forma coerente e estabelecem uma ponte entre a academia e o público em geral, interessado em cinema.

Brazilian Cinema and the Aesthetics of Ruins by Guilherme Carréra
Brazilian Cinema and the Aesthetics of Ruins, by Guilherme Carréra, constitutes an important and innovative contribution to the study of Brazilian cinema, from Cinema Novo and Cinema Marginal to contemporary documentary cinema. The text is clear and easy to read. It stands out the originality of the theme and the balance between an academic language and a more pedagogical approach to writing, with many important references. The analysis includes three types of documentaries which, focusing on different geographies and building different representations of ruins, have in common a profoundly critical view of the dominant notions of progress and underdevelopment of the Brazilian territory. The cartography of destruction, drawn up by Carréra, comprises, therefore, a vast path that spans from the suburbs of Brasília and Rio de Janeiro to the most devastated indigenous territories. In its assessment, the jury valued the renowned profile of the publisher and the relevance of the work for the history of Brazilian cinema and the art of cinema in general.

Imitações da Vida – Cinema Clássico Americano: Ensaios para Mário Jorge Torres is a rich anthology and a well-deserved tribute to Mário Jorge Torres, professor and critic. The title of this anthology emphasizes the honouree’s preferred film genre, but focuses on the entire period designated as classic American cinema. Noteworthy is the excellent preface by José Bértolo, which clarifies the structure of the anthology and, in “dialogue” with a text by Italo Calvino, “A Spectator's Autobiography”, reflects on some of the traits from which it is possible to (re)think the classic American cinema. It is also important to highlight the diversity of Portuguese authors of several generations linked to cinema, among whom we can find several prominent authors with a widely recognized contribution in this field.

Unfinished: The Cinema of Noémia Delgado is a fundamental text that deals with a somewhat forgotten figure in Portuguese cinema. Obsolescence: the Nostalgic Look by Sandra Camacho
Obsolescence: the Nostalgic Look offers a structured, systematic, high-quality analytically and theoretically well-supported reflection on Fábrica, by Daniel Blaufuks. The text, very well written and grounded, makes an excellent archeology of the media, articulating a series of references. Sandra Camacho explores the idea of obsolescence in an exemplary way focusing her reflection on the effect of nostalgia produced by the interaction of the various materials used by Blaufuks, namely, archival images, digital photography and video, as well as films in Super-8. The fact that Blaufuks used footage in super-8, an already obsolete and outdated medium, is particularly relevant to the reflection of the author of the essay, given that, as she observes, “with its tonality, format and noise — might be read as a nostalgic trigger in a digital world”. This award is intended to be an incentive for the author to continue in this area of research with her wonted precision and customary acuity.

Os ensaios que compõem a monografia de José Bértolo começaram por ser textos publicados, à razão de um por mês, entre setembro de 2017 e novembro de 2018, no website À pala de Walsh. Para este livro, o autor reviu-os, modificou-os e acrescentou outros, que antes haviam tomado a forma de comunicações em diversos encontros académicos. O júri destaca, aqui, o estudo nada compósito sobre o conceito de sobreimpressão, que surge clarificado e consolidado pelas leituras dos diferentes objetos fílmicos, em análises de grande rigor e maravilhamento.

A análise que Fátima Chinita opera da trilogia de Roy Andersson vai além de um exame apurado daqueles três filmes do cineasta sueco: engendra uma profunda reflexão acerca de conceitos como a espacialidade, a representação fílmica, o cruzamento entre pintura e cinema, ou a relação entre arte e vida. A originalidade das leituras propostas não recusa, porém, o diálogo com pensadores e críticos que, anteriormente, se ocuparam dos conceitos que neste ensaio são operativos. Foi esta relação com teorias fílmicas, num olhar agudo sobre uma obra, transformado em apreciação da arte, que o júri decidiu premiar.

Trata-se de um trabalho desenvolvido no contexto de uma investigação de doutoramento que analisa a construção do olhar documental no cinema de Frederick Wiseman através da prática da montagem. Com este prémio, o júri premeia o rigor e a originalidade da pesquisa de Pedro Florêncio sobre a obra deste importante cineasta norte-americano.
